Salt Lake Extras

Salt Lake Extras

Here's a short guide to some of the extra stops you can make while visiting Salt Lake City.

Skiing near Salt Lake City

Let’s face it, folks: It’s not all about philosophy when we fly or drive to a new city for a conference. Part of the appeal often is in sampling the local fun fare. In our case, it’s skiing. The statewide skiing website is here. The closest resorts (all within about 45 minutes of driving) include Snowbird, Alta, Brighton, Solitude, The Canyons, Park City Mountain Resort, and Deer Valley. Oh – and the first four of those resorts average over 500 inches of snow per year…

There’s a bus stop on campus for the ski bus – UTA’s ski bus info is here.

The Arts in Salt Lake City

Again – part of the fun in attending a conference in a new city is checking out the local fun spots. If you’re looking to stick around town and aren’t a skier, you’re in luck – we have some of the coolest museums and other artsy attractions around, and they’re all accessible either by bus, train, or close cab ride (though you won’t be able to hail a cab in this town).
The Utah Museum of Natural History (of recent NYTimes fame) is within about two miles of our department, and the Leonardo is located downtown.
The local area has a lot of cool theaters around, including the historic Tower Theater and Broadway Theater, (run by the Salt Lake Film Society), both of which are Sundance Film Festival screening locations each January.

The Utah Symphony Orchestra performs every Friday and Saturday night during the season – they’re worth hearing, and their theater is also worth seeing. I’m a subscriber and have been since I arrived in Utah. Their hall is no Benedum Center, Chicago Theater, or Carnegie Hall – or even Heinz Hall, but it is beautiful in its own way:
